Do You Have A Continuous Shine?

Now that summer is getting closer, some clients are starting to get that shine again. And while the shine is not welcomed, it usually comes with other accompaniments such as greasy skin, oil build up, breakouts, enlarged pores, acne scars, and more…

There are many reasons behind this, starting with overactive sebaceous glands, as well as environmental pollutants and dirt that can get trapped by oil in the pores and cause those blackheads. To make matters worse, bacteria can get trapped, resulting in acne. Unfortunately this affects both men and women, specially men given their thicker skin, excess sebum production, and  day to day grooming regime, which by stripping natural oils from the skin, signals the skin to produce more oil. Hormones are a big culprit behind this too, specially when under stress.

However, not all is bad…Oily skin gives us increased protection against the harmful U/V rays and burns less than drier skin types. Oily skin gets less wrinkles and ages at a slower rate. The solution is to keep that oil in check.

So what should we watch out for? To keep that sebum production in check we should find ways to manage stress, eat healthy and drink lots of water, Why? Because there are some foods that will cause our sebaceous glands to produce more oils and because by drinking water we keep our bodies hydrated and help ourselves get rid of those toxins. There are also treatments and products that can help.

Making It Big in 2018

During our last days of an ending year, we all start analyzing our lives looking at our accomplishments versus our unfinished business and, as a new year begins, we usually make resolutions that will help us complete our stories. Well 2018 at Med Aesthetics Miami, is no different.

This year we have decided to enhance our body sculpting services. Why? Because “Our Promise Is More Than Beauty” and body sculpting is key to our well being. Many times we are doing the right things, but we still can not get the results we want, such as clearing up that cellulite, losing those extra inches, resurfacing those wrinkles, and shrinking that skin that we can pinch.

NEW YEAR NEW START motivational message, inspirational quotes for the New Year resolution in fitness weight loss. Happy woman with arms up in success winning at the sky for new life challenge.

To help you in your goals, we are now bringing unipolar and bipolar radio frequency, as well as focused ultrasound technology. In the past, others appealed to cavitation and similar technologies. However, I prefer this new technology. In the case of body contouring, it is a non invasive, no downtime treatment that delivers concentrated energy to generate heat and friction resulting in volumetric contraction without unwanted side effects. In the case of stretch marks, the pixel technology is amazing.

However, these achievements come at a price… and that is that we have to make the correct lifestyle choices. And, yes while these treatments are for those who make the right choices, these must be maintained. As with most body contouring goals, making it happen will depend on our abilities to stick to our roadmap: sleeping well, drinking adequate amounts of water, eating healthy, and exercising. While this may sound cliche, they are easier said than done and require discipline. So this takes us to our initial blog, “Many Legs To A Stool”; where we discussed how everything is intertwined and there are many variables involved in successful treatments.

Best Wishes in 2018! And call us at Med Aesthetics Miami 305-356-7402, to help you design your plan…please remember “Our Promise Is More Than Beauty”.

Products and Our Skin Care Routine

Many times when my clients come to my office, they ask me what products they should be using. Other times, they don’t ask for fear of costly recommendations. The truth is that a beauty routine should be designed to fit the person’s lifestyle and budget. However, these “skin care maps” when accompanied by treatments should always include pre-treatment options, as well as “at-home” options for better results. If any of these two are missing, the treatment results may not be the same. When I design these plans, and if a client is on a budget, I always try to incorporate what he/she recently purchased even if these are not exactly what I would recommend and even if they don’t support my skin care goals fully (I do make clear what my recommendations would be): we do have to respect financial limits.

Having said that, there are some basic ingredients that I like to include in a skin care routine. For example, Vitamin A will help us treat most skin malfunctions, including wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, by working with the DNA of the cells. Vitamin C (and Vitamin E) are powerful antioxidants. They also help us stimulate collagen production. To support the vascularity of the skin, Vitamin K is key. There are other possibilities, but we would need more space to discuss the different alternatives. Different areas of the skin will have different requirements.

Skin Care and Mental Health

IMG_5416Skin Care and Mental Health

Recently I noticed many of my clients were going through life changing circumstances such as divorce, losses, and the like. Questions about their appearance and weight which resulted from these circumstances, had a direct impact on how they saw themselves.
Yes mental health matters…and it matters both ways: on how we see ourselves and on how we tolerate and react to the treatments. For example, my young client, who came with her mother for laser, started screaming when she saw the machine angled towards her as a result of anxiety. Furthermore, mental health affects how we take care of ourselves in terms of sleep, food and exercise, and these have a direct impact on our skin. In other words, unhealthy eating habits where we fail to take our essential fatty acids, vitamins A / C / E, choline, etc; and lack of sleep, will not allow our cells to perform its functions to the best of their abilities, and therefore result in suboptimal skin.
As I mentioned in my previous blog, there are many legs to a stool. Taking into account the different legs will make a sturdier stool. Next time you look in the mirror, don’t just think about the treatment you just had, but instead think about those other variables within your control that affect your skin, and that when paying attention to them will maximize the results you get from the treatments.

Peels and Exfoliation

Peelings and Exfoliation

Why peel? Chemical peels have been used for a very long time for exfoliation of the skin, for removing dead cells, and for helping in the skin’s natural processes. Peels can help treat different conditions from acne, scars, hyperpigmentation, and more. They have been very popular because of their effectiveness and lower cost relative to other procedures.

While there are different types of peels with different components ranging from mild to deep, in my opinion several milder peels are better than one deep one. To me these peels, preserve your epidermis, yet result in excellent benefits to your skin. Mild peels will exfoliate superficially, while medium peels will reach the dermis with potential excessive peeling and downtime.

So which peel should you use on your skin? Lactic, glycolic, TCA? There are many different peels used to treat different conditions, but they each have a place and time. The ideal one for you, as well as the frequency, can be determined during the consultation. Make sure you don’t forget to discuss any allergies you may have and other lifestyle factors. After the peel, sun protection, and high grade products with antioxidants are a must. After care is key to achieving optimal results. Just remember, you may experience to different degrees redness, dryness, sun sensitivity, and some scabbing, swelling and peeling.

Did You Know May Is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month?

Did You Know May Is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month? Ever since President Reagan began advising the people to stay out of the sun in 1985 after his surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma, the American Academy of Dermatology has been conducting free skin cancer screenings. The reason behind this is that skin cancer outweighs all other types of cancer combined. Only this year, there are an expected 5.4 million new cases of diagnosed skin cancer. Our goal today is to increase awareness, so that our readers can try to avoid the risks, which helps us stay healthy. Some risk factors include, having actinic keratosis, past treatment with radiation, a weakened immune system, been exposed to arsenic, a fair complexion, been exposed to sunlight over long periods of time. Other factors include having a few large or many small moles, a family history of unusual moles or melanoma, and a history of many blistering sunburns. An individual whose skin freckles, tans poorly, or burns easily after sun exposure is particularly susceptible to developing skin cancer. While many people with Caucasian skin are aware of this risk, many darker skin types are not equally aware that they too are at risk and should take the necessary measures to protect their skin from the sun. For example, darker skin types tend to have lower levels of vitamin D, for which a supplement is recommended. Our last thought by detecting any changes in tissue early on, it may be easier to treat these…Screening does help! Lasers versus Radiofrequency

Taking care of your skin has definitely come a long way since Cleopatra’s time. We are faced with so many decisions that it can be overwhelming. Well, our goal today is to help you navigate the labyrinth. Today, we will be discussing laser versus radiofrequency.
So what is the main difference between laser and radiofrequency? The answer to this question is more than a technical answer. What you need to know is what your goal is. Once you define your goal and how the chosen modality will affect it, the steps to follow are not that complicated. There are many ways to get to a destination and once you understand what each tool brings to the table, then you complement it with other procedures to enhance your results.
When addressing the question: laser versus radiofrequency, generally speaking we can say radiofrequency is color blind and has a different heating mechanism than laser. Radiofrequency uses electricity to heat the cells, whereas laser uses light. It targets cells in a pear shape so it has less impact in the epidermis, making it safer when comparing apples to apples; yet laser can be more aggressive and result in more lasting results and the treatment of choice for some modalities. For example, radiofrequency is not used for hair removal; yet it’s excellent for skin tightening.
